On location in Wai filming Freedom at Midnight.

Malay Prakash

I’m a cinematographer drawn to light, emotion, and the quiet power of images. I shoot like I walk—always observing, framing, chasing moments others might miss. That instinct drives my work: helping directors find their voice through the lens.

Born in Patna, raised between cultures, and shaped by a filmmaking degree from NYU Tisch, I’ve worked across Asia with BBH Singapore, shot over 100 commercials since returning to India in 2015, and gradually drifted into narrative cinema. Notable projects include Chhapaak, Raazi (2nd unit), Mumbai Diaries S2, Vedaa, and Freedom at Midnight—the third of my collaborations with Nikkhil Advani.

I like to stay hands-on—experimenting with lighting, playing with frames, and building visuals that feel lived-in and invisible. Lately, I’ve been enjoying tight-knit collaborations with young filmmakers, especially in India’s resurging music video scene.

Currently toggling between ad films and passion projects—always open to where the next good idea comes from.
